Do you see a bathroom mixer tap that is leaking or dripping? What should I do?

Mixer taps are becoming increasingly popular in modern bathrooms. They are replacing the traditional pair of separate hot and cold-water faucets.

Mixer taps come with many benefits, including:

  • It's easy to use
  • It is easy to find the right mix of cold and hot water
  • Modern and stylish design
  • Economical and safe

Mixer taps can be a great addition to any bathroom. However, mixer taps, as with any other component that is used frequently, are susceptible to dripping, leaking, or not turning on.

Mixer taps that leak or drip can be very irritating. They also cause water waste, which will lead to money loss. Sometimes, this problem is easy to fix. Other times, it may require professional plumbing assistance.

Mixer taps that leak or drip

It is normal to see a small amount of drip when you first close the mixer tap. This is not an indication that anything is wrong. If the dripping continues for a prolonged period of time, it is a sign that your tap needs to be investigated further.

This is often caused by the mixer tap being turned too far on a frequent basis. The washer gets too compressed and is not as watertight as it should be.

1. Turn off the water supply. Before you begin to disassemble your tap, locate the stopcock.

2. Depending on the type of taps, either the handle or the cover must be removed. To remove the tap body, loosen the tap headgear nuts. To prevent small parts from falling down the tap hole, place something over it while you fix them!

3. Place the washer. Apply Vaseline to the pin to help it slide over.

4. When replacing the headgear, ensure that you hold the tap tightly while tightening it. Check that the water supply is working by putting it back on.

If that doesn't solve the problem, it may be time to replace the cartridge. If this fails to resolve the problem, then a professional round should be called in order to properly diagnose and treat it.

Mixer taps that don't turn off

A mixer tap that is stuck to the wall needs to be fixed before it causes water waste and can lead to bigger problems.

1. Locate the mains water stopcock, and turn it on. This will stop water from flowing from the faulty tap as well as all other taps in the home.

2 - Remove the cover and handle of the tap, and then unscrew the tap headgear nuts.

3 - Follow the instructions to fix a dripping faucet. Replace the washer and headgear, then tighten the tap.

4. Turn the water off, switch it back on, and then check if the problem has been solved.
